The comfort zone: not a place, but a decision

The comfort zone is not a place. It is a decision.
More precisely: the sum of many small decisions we make every day.
That uncomfortable follow-up question in the meeting? Postponed.
The honest feedback? Put off.
The first step before everything is clear? Tomorrow.
I know the feeling. After 15 years in a corporate group, I chose a different path. The decision itself took a moment. The hesitation before it: considerably longer.
Apparently, I am not alone. More than 8 in 10 employees put off at least one difficult conversation they really need to have (VitalSmarts). And Cornell University has shown that people who deliberately seek discomfort make progress faster. Discomfort is often a sign of progress rather than a stop signal.
That is why I do not believe in one great act of courage. I believe in tiny moments of courage. Ask the follow-up question. Have the conversation. Take the first step.
If you wait for the right moment, you have made a decision too. Just unconsciously.
Which small decision are you putting off right now?
