AI does not shorten recruitment time – it shifts the bottleneck

Dr. Michael Zeisig · 2026-09-29

KI-generiertes redaktionelles Symbolmotiv: KI verkürzt nicht die Recruiting-Zeit – sie verschiebt den Engpass

AI makes your recruitment faster. And yet the position stays open just as long.

This is exactly what can happen when companies use AI where it most obviously saves time: screening.

Applications are reviewed faster. Candidates matched faster. Shortlists created faster.

But capacity for interviews, feedback loops and approvals stays the same.

More qualified candidates in the system sooner then mainly means: more candidates waiting sooner for the same calendars, the same decision-makers and the same feedback.

I keep seeing this pattern in transformations:

A bottleneck does not disappear when you feed it faster.

It moves to the next constriction – and often simply becomes less visible there.

That is precisely why, for me, AI in recruitment is not primarily a tool issue. It is an operating-model issue.

If you speed up one process step, you need to know what downstream can absorb that extra speed.

Has your time-to-hire really become shorter since introducing AI – or just the first step?
