More clarity, less stress: the power of getting thoughts out of your head
Do you know the feeling of being dominated by everyday problems and unfinished tasks? You are not alone! In our hectic working lives, it is easy to lose track and feel overwhelmed. But there is a simple, effective method that can help: getting thoughts out of your head.
🧠 Inspired by the thought-collection method presented by Getting Things Done expert Sabri Eryiğit on the “On the Way to New Work” podcast, I recommend a daily practice that can revolutionise your leadership team.
Step one: thought notes
⏰ Take five to ten minutes each day to write down everything on your mind: unfinished commitments, spontaneous ideas and upcoming tasks. Keep it unstructured and unfiltered. This can be surprisingly liberating. Many people quickly produce a list of thirty to forty topics.
💡 The secret is simplicity: no organising or elaborating, just capturing thoughts. These loose ends are often why we feel constant pressure and cannot switch off.
Step two: centralise
🌟 The second step is equally important. Consolidate all tasks, commitments and ideas in one central place. Avoid storing them across devices, channels and programs. One central place provides clarity and overview.
More focus, less stress
🤔 Getting thoughts out of your head is also a proven exercise I often use to begin workshops. The simple question “What is currently on my mind?” helps people clear their heads, allowing them to focus fully on the workshop or meeting.
🚀 Regularly offloading thoughts and collecting tasks centrally creates mental space and strengthens your ability to maintain an overview. Experience the positive effect on your working day and try it yourself.
