A lunch with insights about shoes that do not fit
Recently, I was at one of those lunches that offer me much more than the food on the plate. Across the table sat the managing director of a technical services company, an old companion with whom I share more than meetings from years gone by. Between mouthfuls and anecdotes, we exchanged stories from recent years: the supposed triumphs and the stumbling blocks.
The importance of real experience
One sentence from him, weightier than the cutlery we were using, still resonates: “You know, Michael, you can only inspire others about something you have experienced emotionally yourself.” His words hit the nail on the head. He continued: “If you have never worked a night shift in a production plant or a logistics operation, it seems almost disrespectful to give talks or publish texts about #NewWork from a bubble of privilege.”
Authenticity and trust in #Leadership
How right he is! We often forget that true #Empathy and understanding grow from experiences we have lived ourselves. How can we discuss the challenges of night shifts if darkness has never descended on us through work and exhaustion? How can we philosophise about New Work without knowing the sweat and tears that go into the work we are trying to change?
This exchange deeply moved me. I thought: “Perhaps we should all pause and reflect on the extent to which we live in a bubble.” Can we really wear the shoes of those for whom we want to create better conditions? Or are we merely talking about it, hoping nobody notices that we are walking barefoot?
Actions over words
I much prefer people who roll up their sleeves to those who talk endlessly and pronounce from a distance. I like people who are prepared to experience things first-hand before advising others. That is the only way we can truly convince and inspire. And who knows? Along the way, we may find not only understanding and respect, but also a pair of shoes that actually fit.
