Flow: five tips for maximum effectiveness in strategy execution
Have you ever been so absorbed in your work that everything around you faded away? Mihaly Csíkszentmihályi called this state “flow”. He developed this theory while observing climbers in the Alps. For him, joy lies in the activity rather than the result.
Flow in strategy execution
I often experience this flow in my projects, a kind of “execution flow”. The key to successful strategy execution is to reach this state. Here, flow means not simply relaxation but complete concentration and efficiency. You work with intense focus on strategic goals without it feeling like effort.
Why flow increases effectiveness
An excellent example of this state is shown in the film “Fish! – Catch the Energy, Release the Potential”, where traders at Seattle’s Pike Place Market become absorbed in their tasks and enter a state of flow. Flow is the narrow ridge between boredom and being overwhelmed. It arises when your work challenges you to the limits of your current abilities without overburdening you. In strategy execution, this state leads to greater productivity and deeper fulfilment.
Five tips for flow in strategy execution
1️⃣ Set clear goals: define clear, motivating goals that sharpen focus.
2️⃣ Create uninterrupted time: enable concentrated work without distractions.
3️⃣ Develop skills: encourage continuous learning and set challenging but achievable tasks.
4️⃣ Grant autonomy: give your team room to experiment and make decisions independently.
5️⃣ Provide positive feedback: regular feedback motivates people and helps them recognise progress.
Flow is a practical tool for improving effectiveness in strategy execution while creating a high level of satisfaction.
