When a visit to the hairdresser gives you goosebumps…
It was early January, and I urgently needed a haircut. I had not managed to get an appointment before Christmas, but fortunately I secured a slot with my favourite local salon right at the start of the year—on a Friday evening at 7 p.m.
When booking online, I could no longer choose who would cut my hair. So I embarked on the adventure, curious about the unknown stylist, recalling an advertising slogan from the 1980s: “I was given beautiful hair; let it live…” “It’ll be fine,” I thought.
When I entered the salon, nobody else was there apart from the hairdresser. Her colleagues had gone home for a well-earned evening off. Getting into the mood for her own evening, she had turned the music up a little. I was fine with that. As her last customer of the day, she greeted me: “Hi Michael, great that you’re here. I’m Michaela. That works nicely!”
Off we went: a hair wash followed by a relaxing head massage. Meanwhile, the chair in front of the basin proved an extremely pleasant companion, massaging my back up and down. Afterwards, sitting in front of the mirror like a drenched, thoroughly kneaded and still untrimmed poodle, came the usual question: “So, what are we doing?” Never able to think of a better answer, I replied as always: “Short.”
And so it was—short and sweet. Michaela was quite talkative, and twenty to twenty-five minutes of hair cutting felt more like five. When she finished, I experienced the evening’s high point. “Oh dear,” she said, “I’ve chatted so much that I barely got to enjoy cutting your hair!”
Surprised, I asked: “What do you mean? It’s Friday evening, you’ve had an entire week and a full day behind you, and you still enjoy cutting my hair at seven o’clock after an intensive working week?” Her answer came without hesitation:
“For me, cutting hair is like music to my ears!”
Wow! What a goosebump moment. Or, in the words of #FrithjofBergmann: “New Work is work you really, really want.” Initially, that has absolutely nothing to do with table football, stylish offices or fruit baskets. How fortunate to encounter somebody with so much passion and intrinsic motivation.
Would you like to experience it yourself? Just get in touch and I will gladly put you in contact for your next haircut with Michaela. ;-)
