A must-read for everyone who wants to create more humane organisations

Another excellent book by Gary Hamel. As so often in his publications, Hamel declares war on organisational bureaucracy in this book too, because:

“Bureaucracy has multiplied our purchasing power but shrunk our souls.”

He names eleven typical characteristics of bureaucratic organisations.

1. There is a formal hierarchy

1. Power is vested in positions
2. Authority trickles down
3. Big leaders appoint small leaders
4. Strategies and budgets are set at the top
5. Central staff groups make policies and ensure compliance
6. Tasks are precisely defined
7. Control is achieved through supervision, rules and sanctions
8. Managers assign tasks and assess performance
9. Everyone competes for promotion
10. Pay depends on rank

Caught out?

If you no longer want to “shrink the souls in your company”, you should quickly start thinking about more humane organisations. I would be delighted to exchange ideas with you.

Have a lovely weekend—I will have time again from Monday!
