đŽđ Hawaiiâs Road to Hana: why the journey matters more than the destination đș
The magic of the Road to HÄna
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of discovering the famous road to HÄna. The Road to HÄna runs for a good 100 kilometres along Mauiâs northern coast in Hawaii, eastwards from the main town of Kahului across 54 bridges to HÄna. Spectacular views of breathtaking landscapes unfold over hours and make you forget everyday life. It is an immersion in another world: waterfalls, cliffs, mountains and endless beaches accompany this unique journey.
A journey, not just a drive
For me and many others, this scenic road is remembered as much more than a transport route. It is a dream #TravelExperience. But how many people do you think fail to grasp the real meaning of the drive? At the end lies the little town of HÄna, a settlement with a petrol station. We met people who, having âfinallyâ arrived, asked disappointedly: âWe drove all that way to see this?â
That is precisely the heart of the message:
đŽđ It is not about the destination; it is about the journey itself. đș
Our society mostly rewards results and celebrates arrivals. But what about the valuable experiences gathered along the way? As the renowned author Tal Ben-Shahar, PhD, puts it so aptly in his book âHappier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillmentâ: âSociety rewards results, not processes.â
The true #Reward
What would happen if we resisted this cultural trend? If we allowed ourselves to experience the journey consciously? Ironically, that is precisely when the true rewards reveal themselves. The road to HÄna symbolises that it is not just about arriving, but about appreciating the journey, its discoveries and experiences.
Joy and fulfilment in the process
In a world driven by speed and goals, we should occasionally remind ourselves to keep the journeyâs true value in view. The moment we allow ourselves to appreciate the process and the path, we find real joy and fulfilment in everyday life.
Every journey is an experience
That is why I encourage you to travel even more consciously. Regard a journey in your life that may initially seem an obstacle, perhaps even a wrong turn, as a valuable experience. Let the Road to HÄna remind you that, in the end, it is not about where we arrive. What matters is HOW we arrive.
With that in mind: may your next Road to HÄna be magical. đđ
