Set in your ways or ready for the future? When comfort zones prevent change
Why does change often fail precisely where it is needed most? Meffert & Meffert put it succinctly in their book Eins oder Null — quotation:
“Established organisations have considerable inertia. When business is going well, management and employees rarely go beyond paying lip service to a willingness to change! The most successful leaders, in particular, often slow transformation efforts behind the scenes: they calculate that they personally have little to gain but much to lose. They are often opinion leaders and members of the inner circle.”
Yet if organisations want to be fit for the future, staying in their comfort zone is not enough. Transformation requires courage — from everyone involved.
The crucial question is: How do we overcome this often hidden resistance?
It takes:
• Clear incentives to make change attractive.
• Open communication to address fears.
• Courageous leaders who recognise and openly address the games people play, even when it is uncomfortable.
