How to act as a united, determined leadership team and bring change over the finish line

Do you trust one another in your leadership team? Treat each other honestly, fairly and openly? The more problems you sweep under the carpet, the less success you will achieve in turbulent times. Considering the importance of trust and #Teamwork shows how you can tackle change successfully as a leadership team. Patrick Lencioni’s “Five Dysfunctions of a Team” pyramid illustrates the connections impressively.

Trust as the foundation

Effective leadership teamwork and successful change, innovation and progress rest on #Trust. The first level of #LencionisPyramid highlights its importance. Without trust—Lack of Trust—open communication and constructive discussion are impossible. In the pursuit of harmony, problems are often concealed and conflicts not addressed constructively—Lack of Conflict. These teams tend towards a “yes culture”, in which decisions are accepted on the surface but rejected internally.

Trust enables commitment

In the worst case, people ally with the one trusted person in the team in a “shared silent NO”, which in turn gives their “silent NO” a sense of legitimacy. Team members then do not feel obliged to support decisions with full engagement—Lack of Commitment. In a trusting environment, by contrast, members take responsibility for implementing decisions. Anyone who does not internally support a decision will not take responsibility for its implementation—Lack of Accountability—let alone actively drive it forward.

Preventing poor results

This can lead to poor results—Lack of Results—and often to covert blame over responsibility for them, following the motto: “I thought so from the start, but didn’t say it!” Sound familiar? Then it is time to break this negative spiral. How about conducting the Lencioni survey in your leadership team? It clarifies the level of trust you currently share. Afterwards, reflect on the results together in a team conversation, preferably facilitated.

Mastering change

Trust and #Teamwork are crucial in #ChangeManagement if a leadership team is to tackle change successfully. Use Lencioni’s pyramid as a guide and work together to strengthen your team and reach your goals, united and determined.
