Steve Jobs once said: “People always think focus means concentrating on what matters. Far from it!
It means saying goodbye to the hundred other good ideas that are also there. You have to choose carefully. I am as proud of the things we have not done as I am of the things I have done. Innovation means saying no to a thousand things.”

These words are more relevant today than ever. Maintaining focus is crucial. But what does that mean in practice for us and our work?

The power of focus
Concentration is more than simply pursuing a goal. It means consciously setting priorities and ruling out the many tempting alternatives. Only then can we achieve truly great things.

Careful selection
We face countless decisions every day. Which idea do we pursue, and which do we drop? These decisions determine our long-term success. Be proud of the things you consciously chose not to do — they are just as important as what you have achieved.

Innovation through restraint
Innovation takes courage. The courage to say no and focus on what matters. Only through this restraint can we create something new and stand out from the crowd.
From my own experience, I know all too well that the larger organisations become, the harder it is to say no. Every department has its own priorities and depends on input from others. Saying no requires leaders with backbone who are prepared to stand up to the interests of others. Above all, however, it takes a willingness to cooperate so that priorities can be aligned across departments.

Leaders who do not face the headwind and simply “wave things through downwards” — in other words, who do not say no — should not be surprised when innovative strength steadily declines.
