Why the best solutions begin with a blank sheet of paper
Why standard solutions are not the answer
As a management consultant, I am often asked: “Have you solved this problem before?” My answer frequently surprises people: I deliberately start with a blank sheet. Anyone who relies too heavily on established recipes often overlooks the particular requirements of a new challenge.
A blank sheet creates room
Many solutions fail because they are copied without considering actual needs. A blank sheet allows individual analysis, listening and the development of tailored strategies. Standard approaches, by contrast, risk becoming irrelevant before they can have any real effect.
Creativity as a competitive advantage
The blank sheet symbolises a willingness to adopt new perspectives. It invites us to question old patterns and find routes that actually lead to the goal. This is about thoughtful solutions that last, rather than quick answers.
The first step into something new
Starting with a blank sheet also means accepting uncertainty. That often makes the beginning challenging. But this is precisely where the opportunity lies: those who have the courage to engage with something new develop solutions that work and are unique.
My conclusion
Leaders willing to think afresh create room for real innovation. Instead of following routines, they pursue tailored approaches that are individual and sustainable. That creates progress which lasts beyond the short term and makes a real difference.
