61% of CEOs say: The board is pushing AI faster than the organisation can follow.

61% of CEOs say: The board is pushing AI faster than the organisation can follow.
Not because the board has bad intentions.
But because it does not see the gaps the CEO feels every day.
That is what the new BCG study ‘Split Decisions’ shows (625 executives, May 2026):
– 35% of CEOs: Boards overestimate which human capabilities AI can replace.
– More than 50%: AI hype distorts judgement in the boardroom.
– 40% of board members with limited AI familiarity believe: The company is moving too slowly.
The pattern: Those who do not really understand AI respond by demanding speed.
The board demands scale. The CEO knows the processes do not exist to support it.
The CEO wonders who is liable for wrong decisions. The board discusses potential.
This does not contradict the AI strategy.
It is the governance problem of 2026.
In 2026, AI does not fail because of technology. It fails because the board and CEO are steering different realities.
What do you experience: board pressure or the CEO putting on the brakes?
