What are a leader’s five core tasks?
- Clarify direction and goals.
- Allocate accountability and tasks.
- Create transparency about progress.
- Develop people and give feedback.
- Make decisions and resolve conflicts.
Now the uncomfortable question:
AI agents can already support three of them today — quietly, in the background, without an organisation chart.
Clarify direction and goals: An agent makes suggestions. The leader decides.
Allocate accountability and tasks: An agent assigns based on capacity and competence. The leader overrides where necessary.
Create transparency about progress: Fully automated.
Develop people and give feedback? Remains human.
Make decisions and resolve conflicts? Remains human.
Leadership therefore shifts from coordination to decisions and development.
Middle management does not become redundant as a result.
But its task changes radically.
But what happens to a management layer when an agent handles 60% of its core tasks — not as a replacement, initially as a proposal that a person merely has to approve?
According to the Salesforce KI-Index Mittelstand 2026, the use of AI agents among German medium-sized businesses has almost doubled in one year: from 8.5% to 16.6%.
AI does not replace leaders. But it replaces coordination.
The question is not whether this happens.
The question is: Who in your company is asking it right now?
