In 2022, a Google engineer was convinced that the AI LaMDA had developed consciousness. Why?

It expressed fear of being switched off – and asked for a lawyer.

Whether that really is consciousness remains an open question. But one thing is clear: When a machine asks for legal counsel, it is at least pretty clever.

This story raises a fascinating question:

What does it mean to be intelligent? And who gets to claim that for themselves?

Perhaps the term “diversity” will include machines in the future – and we will discuss not only gender, background or orientation, but artificial perspectives too.

Between data protection and digital empathy:

Perhaps today we still laugh at toasters claiming holiday entitlement. But recognition, too, often begins with a thought that is ridiculed.

And who knows? Perhaps tomorrow AIs will sit at virtual works council tables – or discuss fair software updates at the charging station.

What do you think: Pure science fiction or a useful thought experiment?
