70% of strategies fail. Not because of the strategy. Because of execution.

70% of strategies fail. Not because of the strategy. Because of execution.
Last week at a client: more than 20 initiatives and projects in parallel. Not an unusual phenomenon: lots of movement, but no progress!
Why? Because nobody is prepared to make sacrifices.
The sacrifice paradox:
Strategy means choice. Choice means going without.
If you do A, you cannot do B.
But implementation makes it concrete:
- "We need three people from your team." → "Impossible, we have no capacity."
- "Initiative X has priority." → "Yes, but initiative Y is important too."
- "We are stopping project Z." → "But we have already invested in it!"
Everyone nods at the strategy. But when the consequences become visible, support crumbles.
Strategy execution does not fail because of the plan. It fails because of a lack of commitment to the sacrifices.
What do I see in successful implementation?
They do three things differently:
1. Explicit discussion of sacrifices
"If we do this, we cannot do that. Are we prepared to give it up?"
2. Resource reality
Not 12 initiatives in parallel. Three to five focus topics. The rest waits.
3. A constructive approach to resistance
Resistance is not an enemy. Resistance shows where it hurts. That is where leadership needs to go.
70% fail because they ignore the sacrifice paradox.
The other 30% have understood: there is no free lunch.
💬 Hand on heart: are you prepared to go without for your strategy — or do you want everything at once?
