In the letterbox today: A letter from Deutsche Rentenversicherung.

In the letterbox today:
A letter from Deutsche Rentenversicherung.
6 pages. Three enclosures.
Subject: “Employer audit under Section 28p of Book IV of the German Social Code” – sounds like sleepless nights.
The result in plain language:
Everything is in order.
No additional payments.
No further steps required.
Please file away (-> better still: archive digitally!)
Done. One paragraph. Six lines.
How did I work that out?
I scanned the six pages, uploaded them to ChatGPT and asked:
“Can you please translate this into normal German?”
Two seconds later, I had the answer.
Why six densely printed pages have to be sent for this is probably known only to the German administrative apparatus itself.
What I do know: This is exactly where one of our country’s biggest modernisation problems lies – unnecessary complexity, a flood of paper and jargon.
My conclusion:
In business, this would be unthinkable – meanwhile, the state keeps writing six pages where six lines would suffice.
And wonders why digitalisation and citizen-friendly services are not progressing.
It is time to fundamentally overhaul our administrative apparatus:
From officialese to plain language.
From a flood of paper to pragmatism.
Anything else is no longer in keeping with the times.
💬 A question for you:
When did you last receive a letter from a public authority that could have been explained in three sentences?
