For a long time, leaders had two tasks:
Making decisions and coordinating.
As organisations grew, coordination increasingly became the main work of leadership:
Aligning, reporting, prioritising, allocating, following up.
That is why organisations became management pyramids.
Now something new is happening:
Coordination can be automated.
Not perfectly. But well enough.
And above all: at scale.
That changes more than work.
It changes the role of leadership.
In the past, leaders were coordinators with decision rights.
In the future, leaders will be decision-makers and system designers —
without the burden of coordination.
So the interesting question is not:
What does AI do to work?
The more interesting question is:
What is the role of leadership in an organisation where a system handles coordination?
