Josh sits at the very bottom of the organisation chart. And yet he is the most influential person in the company.
That is not wishful thinking — it is research.
An HBR study by Battilana and Casciaro shows:
The most effective change agents in the British healthcare system were not the senior leaders.
They were the people others turned to when they needed advice.
The Josh paradox:
Those at the centre of the informal network move more than the boss.
Three uncomfortable truths for leaders:
→ Your supporters support you anyway. You do not need to convince them.
→ Your opponents rarely change. Energy spent here is usually wasted.
→ The undecided are your lever. They determine whether your change succeeds or fails.
If you want to push change through by virtue of your position, you have already lost.
The real question is not: "How senior is my title?"
But: "Whom do people trust — and how do I win that person over to my change?"
