My highest engagement rate in recent months contradicts my own system. And it took me a long time to admit it.

I manage my LinkedIn content in a structured tracker: content pillars, formats, audiences, scores. A system I built myself to ensure consistency.

Last week, I reviewed the figures from the past few months. One post stands out with an engagement rate of 9.8%. The average for my otherwise strongest pillar category is 4.77%.

The post with the highest engagement rate did not fit any of my standard categories. It was rawer, more personal and less carefully thought through than what my system would classify as "optimal".

For me, the interesting part is not really LinkedIn. I see the same pattern in organisations: we build processes, standards and governance to make quality repeatable. At some point, however, these systems start primarily reproducing themselves.

A good system prevents inconsistency. A very good system deliberately leaves room for deviation.

Otherwise, we optimise ourselves into mediocrity.

Which of your own rules is currently holding back what should be making a difference?
